Have you seen this man? This is the appeal detectives looking into the gruesome murder of Rita Waeni are making to members of the public.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has released a CCTV screengrab image of a man they allege is linked to the murder of the third-year student whose chopped up body was found in a short-stay rental in Roysambu. The identity of who hired the house from its owner remains a mystery.

The man is dressed in a black cardigan and dark-coloured trousers. He's also wearing a white cap and dark sunglasses, making the full profile of his face harder to see. However, despite this, DCI sleuths believe members of the public who know the man that was seen walking with Waeni before her death will recognise him and help them find him.

Police say the two were captured on camera as they headed to the scene of crime.

“Elaborate forensic analyses have so far been done by the investigating team, capturing the deceased's last moments and linking probable suspects to her murder. Further, detailed statements by persons of interest have been recorded and more data sourced from digital platforms to ensure that all leads to Rita's killer(s) are utilised,” the statement issued Wednesday read.

“...the Homicide Directorate calls upon anyone who can identify the man whose images (though blurry) appear on this post, to come forward and share information that may assist in his arrest,” the statement further read.

Waeni was a third-year student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT). She was killed at a time when she was living with her aunt in Syokimau, Machakos County.

According to a statement by the aunt, Waeni left home on January 13, 2024, never to be seen alive again.

Police say Waeni and her killer had been communicating on Instagram before meeting, but that the man was using a pseudonym profile by the name Carlton Maina.

Police say the profile name was changed several times before the account was finally pulled down by the suspect immediately after Waeni's murder.
