A policeman was killed and four of his colleagues injured after an explosion at Border Point 4 in Mandera East Tuesday.

The five officers from the Regular and Administration Police were on foot patrol during the 4pm incident.

The dead officer is said to have trod on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) accidentally. The IED detonated killing him on the spot.

The injured officers were rushed to Mandera Provincial General Hospital. The Red Cross dispatched a chopper to airlift the officers to Nairobi for treatment.

Security in the area has been tightened following an influx of Somalia nationals and the police officers were patrolling the border post to maintain law and order.
