Four Africans have been honoured for their role in fighting for the rights of women to obtain reproductive healthcare.

South Africa’s Ronald Edgar Mhlanga, Ghana’s Fred Sai, Zambia’s Chanda Katongo and Kenya’s Monica Ogutu were the recipients of awards presented at Hilton Hotel, Nairobi, on Wednesday night.

The event marked the 40th anniversary of non-profit organisation, Ipas, that works to increase women’s ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights, and to reduce maternal mortality as a result of unsafe abortions.

Ipas president Elizabeth Maguire praised the honourees for their work.

“Their life stories and careers convey better than anything their passion, daring leadership and determination to overcome all barriers that are key to transforming prospects of women’s health in Africa,” Ms Maguire told the function.
