Meet the local MPs
Posted Thursday, January 19 2012 at 00:00
Of the county’s four MPs, three are serving their first terms. All are in the Party of National Unity led by President Kibaki with three — Mr Amos Kimunya, Mr Erastus Mureithi and Mr Jeremiah Kioni on Narc tickets — while Mr David Ngugi represents Sisi kwa Sisi.
Amos Kimunya... The MP for Kipipiri is the only Cabinet minister in the county. An accountant serving his second term in Parliament for Narc, Mr Kimunya ousted Mr Mwangi Githiomi at his first attempt and was immediately appointed to the Cabinet where he became a close ally of President Kibaki. He retained his seat in 2007.
Erastus Mureithi... The member for Ol Kalou is a first time MP on a Narc ticket who formerly worked as a commissioner for cooperatives.
He joined the Cooperative Bank of Kenya as managing director before stepping down to concentrate on flower farming in Ngong and in his constituency.
Mr Mureithi was elected Kenya Flower Council chairman and won his seat by beating Mr Muriuki Karue.
Jeremiah Kioni... The MP for Ndaragwa is also serving his first term in Parliament, also for Narc.
A land valuer, he was working in Nairobi where he was employed by a firm owned by Mr Muchiri Gachara, the man he beat to take the seat.
Currently the Government’s deputy chief whip, Mr Kioni is a close associate of Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta.
David Ngugi... He is another first time MP, elected to represent Kinangop on a Sisi kwa Sisi ticket.
Mr Ngugi was formerly chairman of the Association of Kenya Insurers, the umbrella body of all insurance companies in Kenya.
