Kericho has four constituencies all represented by MPs elected for the ODM. However, two have since shifted allegiance and Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Eldoret North MP William Ruto have two foot soldiers each.
Franklin Bett… As the only Cabinet minister from the county, the 58-year-old MP for Bureti is the most senior legislator.
A former State House comptroller during the Moi era, Mr Bett is serving his second term in Parliament the first being as a nominated Narc member.
One of Mr Odinga’s remaining loyalists in the Rift Valley, Mr Bett has declared an interest in the chairmanship of ODM.
Magerer Lang’at… Another key ally of Mr Odinga, the assistant Minister for Energy and MP for Kipkelion was born in 1973 at Fort Ternan.
A Bachelor of Science graduate in horticulture from Jomo Kenyatta University of Science and Technology and Master of Science student in agriculture and rural development at Kenya Methodist University, he first attempted to join Parliament in 2002 but was not elected until 2007.
Charles Keter… The MP for Belgut, who shot into the limelight with the Keter Bill which sought to reduce the powers of the President, is serving a second uninterrupted term. His Constitutional (Amendment No.2) Bill, 2004, was meant to wrest control of the National Assembly from the Executive and give it the power to regulate its sittings.
One of Eldoret North MP William Ruto’s trusted lieutenants, Mr Keter was in 2009 dropped from the position of assistant Energy Minister as Mr Odinga tried to clip Mr Ruto’s wings.
Benjamin Lang’at… The MP for Ainamoi who is also affiliated to Mr Ruto joined Parliament in June 2008 in a by-election held to replace his step-brother David Kimutai Too who was killed in January 2008, in Eldoret.
The former senior accountant with Chai Trading Company, an affiliate of KTDA, holds an MBA in accounting and a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Nairobi, and says he would defend his Ainamoi seat, “unless dynamics change.”
