Storage solutions for the foyer

We all, and I mean all without exception, do this: Key on lock, turn and open the door — and shudder at the sight of the first room of the house.
What we encounter comes in all shapes and sizes; from a wide open formal foyer, a self-contained room, or a narrow entry hall, just to mention a few.
Many homes have more than one entryways. One is dedicated to welcoming guests and the other, an informal one, regularly used by close friends and family.
No matter how big, small or whichever shape yours is, we all face a common organisational challenge at the entryway.
Visitors and residents alike find that they have to spend a few minutes at the entryway trying to discard things they came in with or looking for things they have to pick on their way out.
The tidiness challenge here faces both those who have a dedicated entry and those who do not.
Tidy and inviting one minute; and the next, shoes and all manner of wares are strewn all over in this usually small space.
In this part of Africa where we find it unhygienic to walk around the house with outdoor shoes, the sight of shoes at the entryway can be an eyesore.
Planning storage solutions for this sometimes ‘small’ room is an exercise that will make the difference in our homes.
Seeing that you may sometimes be working with a small space, storage solution for this area must be efficient.
They must also be chosen with style in mind because the area is small and anything you pick can become a decorative accent for the entryway.
Your entryway can therefore provide a favourable first impression and a comfortable transition to the rest of the house.
And who knows… some guests don’t go past the entryway as they may be in a hurry. You can make them feel at home even in this small room.
Transition furnishing
Being at the entryway of the home means you’re either coming in or going out. Every entry will benefit greatly from a place to sit for a moment.
This is not your favourite sofa, seeing that you might be limited on space and you only need to sit for a few minutes.
A bench at the entry is a favourite option as it offers a solid base, and more than one person can sit on it at the same time.
It is also ideal for wrestling with your boots and can provide some storage space underneath to help you organise storage.
