What you need to know:

  • Holy Dave aka HD is a gospel hip-hop artiste who believes in walking the straight and narrow. He spoke to KEVIN MOGALLO

BUZZ: Why ‘’holy’’ Dave?

HD When I started rapping my friends called me “Holy Joe”, I later customized it to “Holy Dave”.

I wanted to drop the name later on but one of my mentors advised me not to. He told me that it should be my daily goal to be holy. As you might know holy, means set apart, unique, and different.

When did you start your music career?

I started rapping in 1998 but I officially started my music career in 2004 when I released my first solo single “Even Though I Walk”.

Do you have another Profession other than music?

I have a degree in Applied Computer Science so I have been pursuing my IT career.

I am currently on the verge of completing a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Strategic Marketing.

Why all that?

Knowledge is invaluable.

When was your big break in the industry?

I never had a single break in the industry. I have had a series of breaks along the years. Every single I have done has propelled me to greater heights.

Is gospel music to you charity or is it business?

To me gospel music is a way of reaching out to the masses, spreading the message of Jesus Christ, and making the world a better place by encouraging, uplifting and inspiring souls.

However, even the bible says we should eat from what we do so I don’t think it is wrong for anyone to earn a living from whatever work they do.

You won some awards earlier this year, tell me about them.

I have won only one award, 2010 Groove Award in the Hip-hop category for the song Niko Na Reason, collaboration with Eko Dydda. I thank my supporters for recognizing my efforts and voting for our song.

How about the CHAT?

No offense but I don’t recognize the Chaguo La Teeniez Award in the Teeniez Track of the Year because they didn’t allow me to go receive it.

What went wrong at Teeniez awards?

I still don’t understand what happened. A few days to the awards ceremony I talked to one of the organizers on phone and she told me artistes should be seated by 11 am but when I enquired about whether I was performing since my partner had told me that he was performing, they told me no.

I think I that was unfair. It’s unfortunate that this was apparently the first award I have ever won and I wasn’t present to pick it up. When I was told that our song had won I didn’t know whether to be happy or to be sad. I just went to bed.

I hope to get an explanation soon; otherwise, I will just keep saying the truth hoping no other artiste is treated that way. A collabo is a collabo!

Is it easy being HOLY Dave?

It is not that easy. People usually set very high standards and expectations and sometimes us feel as if they are monitoring your every step.

What are you doing for charity?

I am currently overseeing the education of two relatives who are orphans in a renowned University/College in town thanks to my family and well wishers who contribute every semester. I am planning to launch my own foundation that will aim to educate needy bright students in our ghettos and rural areas.

Do you think you are the best?

No. All I can say is that I am confident and I sure that I have something to offer. I am not in competition with anyone. I am only in competition with “Perfection”. I think everyone is unique in their own way.

Is the industry solid?

This industry is full of cliques and cartels. Most people give shows and deals to their friends instead of going to the streets and asking the fans who they want. Another challenge is airplay. Some stations don’t play gospel music. Some don’t play Hip-hop. I hope one day things will be better.

Any words of wisdom you live by.

Stay true to yourself and believe in God because you can do all things through Christ.
