Police probe Kenya stadium deaths

Police on Sunday began investigations into circumstances that led to the death of fans at the Nyayo National Stadium during a floodlit Premier League match between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia on Saturday evening.

Nairobi Provincial Police boss Mr Anthony Kibuchi who had been attending a seminar on reforms in Nakuru rushed back to the city to coordinate the investigations.

Police were by Sunday compiling a list of all the dead and injured from all hospitals around the city.

Over 380 police officers including a 100 man anti riot police contingent had been deployed to Nyayo National Stadium to provide security during the tension packed match.

“There were 285 police officers covering the stadium along with one hundred riot squad officers,” a senior police officer revealed on Sunday.

Four bodies including that of a 21-year old Railways Training Institute student were being preserved at the City Mortuary by Sunday afternoon. Another person who died in the stampede has been identified as a Kenyatta National Hospital based taxi driver.

Discharged

Nine injured people were treated and discharged at the Kenyatta National Hospital. Two other injured people visited KNH later in the night and were treated and discharged while one person was admitted at Menelik hospital according to police.

One person who was undergoing treatment at KNH reportedly disappeared after doctors at the Casualty departments referred him to X-Ray. Two others were treated at the Nairobi Hospital.

AFC Leopards Secretary General Robert Asembo who visited KNH and the City Mortuary on Sunday sent his condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured quick recovery.

“I pass my condolences to the families of the bereaved and wish the injured quick recovery. I hope lessons will be learnt from Saturday’s happenings,” Asembo said.
