Lawyer set to reveal Ruto-Ocampo talks

The lawyer representing suspended Higher Education minister William Ruto has said he will issue a briefing of their meeting with the International Criminal Court.

Dr Kithure Kindiki told the Nation Friday that he will give a comprehensive statement of their meeting between his client and ICC Prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo at 4 p.m. Kenyan time.

"We will be in a long meeting but we can talk at four o'clock," he said.

Mr Ruto headed to the Hague on Wednesday night for a meeting with Mr Moreno-Ocampo Thursday morning.

He said he had requested the meeting to record a statement with the court, which is investigating the violence that broke out after the 2007 elections.

“I asked for an appointment with Ocampo and his group so that we can set the record straight and get to the truth and I’m happy that they gave me the appointment,” he told journalists at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.

He also revealed that he was the prominent Kenyan who had written to Mr Moreno-Ocampo to volunteer his assistance.

On Thursday, Dr Kindiki told the Nation that they had agreed on the rules and procedure that will enable Mr Ruto to tell what he knows about the post election chaos.

He was speaking after Mr Ruto and his team emerged from a meeting with Mr Moreno-Ocampo at The Hague.

“We have had a meeting between counsels, the prosecutor and our client (Mr Ruto) and finalised the procedure which will guide the substantive process that will be done tomorrow (Friday) morning. We want to use the meeting to set the record straight about the perceived role my client played,” he said.
