Local authorities that may have disposed assets illegally will be probed, Local Government minister Musalia Mudavadi has said.

He warned the councils that he will seek the intervention of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (Kacc) in the matter.

"It has come to our understanding that some councils are disposing of their assets against the law. Why the rush?” he asked.

Let the racketeers be warned that we shall deal with them firmly. My Ministry with assistance from Kacc will descend on the councils which disposed of their assets.”

He was speaking when he officially launched the Mtwapa strategic urban development plan (2008-2030) at Mtwapa, Kilifi Tuesday.

Mr Mudavadi said Ministry officials and Kacc will visit several councils, which sold off parcels of land without approval from the government.

He noted that since the new Constitution was realised, some civic bosses have been on the rush disposing of council properties without seeking approval from the Ministry.

The minister said some councils have already made land transfers for public utility land, which they later sold off to private developers and individuals.

He said those engaging in illegal deals would be arrested and charged.
