Ship with freed Kenyans docks in Mombasa

A ship carrying 39 Kenyans, who were released by Somali pirates last weekend after months in captivity, has docked at the Port of Mombasa.

However, their relatives of have been blocked from seeing them as they undergo medical tests.

The MV Golden Wave was released by pirates in unclear circumstances last week, dock at Tuesday morning and was met by hundreds of relatives of the freed Kenyans.

On Monday, the East Africa Seafarers Assistance programme coordinator Andrew Mwangura said the ship was being escorted by the Kenya Navy.

“We expected the ship to dock this (Monday) morning but it has been delayed because Kenya Navy had to inspect those who were being held hostage to ensure they were healthy and the vessel serviced to good condition,” said Mr Mwangura.

The vessel was hijacked 10 nautical miles from Kenya’s coastline.

The Kenyans had been held hostage for four months.

There were no reports of ransom payment.
