10 left in race for Kenya CJ

The race of who will be Kenya's next Chief Justice has been reduced to 10 after the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) dropped two candidates.

The shortlisted candidates will now face an interview panel in May.

Those left to fight it out include nine judges and lawyer Dr Willy Mutunga. Those who have been dropped include Timothy Isaac Bryant, a lawyer in private practice in Nairobi and Edward Torgbor, a Ghanaian judge who has served in Kenya before.

Left to battle it out are International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) judge Lee Muthoga, Court of Appeal judges Alnashir Visram, Joseph Nyamu, Riaga Omollo and Samuel Bosire. High Court Judges eyeing the position are Paul Kihara, Msagha Mbogoli, Mary Angawa and Kalpana Rawal.

At the same time, eight candidates are left in the race for Deputy CJ after five, including judges William Ouko and Nicholas Ombija were dropped.

Deputy CJ candidates who will face the interview panel include judges Roseline Nambuye, Martha Koome, Mary Kasango, Hannah Okwengu, Mary Ang'awa and Joseph Nyamu. The others are lawyers Gladys Shollei and Nancy Baraza.
