A pastor was on Monday charged with murder following the stabbing to death of a pregnant student in Trans Nzoia county.

Pastor Charles Okera, 26, of Pentecostal Assemblies of God pleaded not guilty before Lady Justice Martha Koome and was remanded in custody at Kitale main prison.

Lady Justice Koome set November 1 as the hearing date.

Secret relationship

The court heard that the Form Four student of Yuya Secondary School and the pastor had been in a secret relationship for a year and the girl was expecting triplets.

She was also a Sunday school teacher at Yuya Pentecostal Assemblies of God church headed by the pastor.

State counsel Brenda Bartoo told the court that the pastor stabbed the student around 6pm at Yuya area on July 7.

A postmortem test showed the girl died of seven stab wounds on the throat.

Kitale District Pathologist Blasteus Kakunda removed six-month foetuses of triplets from the girl’s womb.

The affair came to light after the student told her parents that she was pregnant.

The matter was reported to the police and the pastor was arrested and charged. He pleaded not guilty and was freed on bond.

Last week, it is alleged, a man lured the student to meet him on her return home after attending clinic at Kitale District Hospital.

The girl alighted near the Kibomet Africa Inland Church where the man was waiting.

After a lengthy discussion, the student left to board a matatu but as she walked away, the man whipped out a sword and stabbed her on the neck several times.

He then fled to a nearby maize plantation, but was arrested when a guard at a nearby raised the alarm, attracting residents who rushed to the scene, but it was too late to save the girl.

Police arrived at the scene and saved the man from being lynched. A psychiatric test on Pastor Okera at Kitale District Hospital showed he was fit to stand trial.

The girl was buried at her Yuya home on Friday night.
