Three people were killed and 12 seriously injured following a road crash at Kibarani, Mombasa early Saturday.

The bus was heading to Mombasa from Kitui when it rammed a lorry at 5.20am, according to Deputy Coast Provincial Police Officer Robert Kipkemoi Kitur.

He said the three, two men and a woman died on the spot. Both vehicles were heading towards Mombasa.

“It looks like the bus veered towards the lorry which also tilted a bit although we have not established the exact truth,” said Mr Kitur, who urged drivers to be more careful especially at night.

The police boss condemned the public for rushing into the bus immediately after the accident to loot.

“Hii tabia gani wandugu Wakenya? Hata hamna huruma? Mnajitafutia laana”. (What is this behaviour Kenyans? Don't you have empathy? You are inviting a curse), bemoaned the police boss.

Several mobile phones and other personal belongings including handbags were stolen before police arrived at the scene.

An eye witness, Suleiman Shenga Chilumo, said he was riding a motorbike when suddenly he noticed the bus veering off its lane.

“To me, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle as he tried to overtake another vehicle. He rammed the rear of the lorry which was moving at a slower speed,” he said.

According to Mr Kitur, the lorry belongs to Multiple Hauliers Company, while the bus belongs to Mash Company.

The injured were rushed to the Coast General Hospital.
