At least 12 people were killed in Kenya when armed tribesmen launched a dawn raid Tuesday to steal livestock from a rival community in the remote northern Samburu region, the Red Cross said.

"At least 12 people have died in Samburu in a dawn attack," said Kenyan Red Cross official Nelly Muluka, adding that women and two men had also been hospitalised.

Armed men from Turkana community raided the Samburu village of Lomero, stealing some 300 camels, Muluka said, adding that all the dead were from the Samburu tribe.

The arid and impoverished Samburu region is some 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the capital Nairobi.

Both the Samburu and the Turkana people are semi-nomadic pastoralists who herd mainly cattle but also keep sheep, goats and camels.

Clashes are common, with herders often carrying guns to protect their animals.
