Five killed, scores injured in Busia accident

At least five people were killed on Saturday morning in separate road accidents in Busia County.

Three people were killed after a speeding bus overturned in Mundika, Busia County injuring 39 people.

Two cyclist also died after a speeding pick-up rammed into them at Rakite near Bumala market along the Busia – Kisumu highway.

According to Busia OCPD Kenneth Kimani, a speeding bus attempted to overtake another bus but the driver lost control of the vehicle resulting into the accident.

"Among the dead include two women and a child. 10 people have been seriously injured and rushed to Tanaka Hospital and 39 more have slight injuries," he said.

According to an eye witness Mr Evans Masiga Okello, the driver of the bus belonging to Western Emirates Company tried to overtake another bus which was headed towards Kisumu from Busia town.

“The driver lost control of the bus, which veered off the road and rolled several times before landing on its roof,” said Okello adding that the bus was speeding when the accident occurred.

Mr Vincent Okang’o Opongo, a survivor who lost his wife in the accident said he was to alight at Bumula but the driver refused to stop the bus.

“The driver failed to stop despite our plea to do so and this has cost the life of my wife,” said Mr Opongo.

“The body of my wife is still trapped and I cannot do anything to retrieve it,” he added.

When Nation visited the scene, the bodies including that of Mr Opongo’s wife were still trapped in the wreckage.

His child who suffered minor injuries was rushed to Tanaka Hospital together with other 39 victims.
