President Mwai Kibaki on Monday officially received a copy of the results of the just concluded General Election in which President-elect Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President-elect William Ruto clinched the top positions.

The copy of the results was presented to President Kibaki by the Independent Electoral and Boundary Commission (IEBC) Chairman Isaack Hassan who was accompanied by the Commission’s chief executive officer James Oswago and members of the commission.

The IEBC is constitutionally mandated to forward the results to the President and the Chief Justice.

Speaking after appending his signature on the copy of the election results, President Kibaki commended IEBC for conducting a successful and peaceful election.

“I followed the voting exercise closely. I commend the IEBC for their diligence and hard work and thank Kenyans for being peaceful,” Kibaki said.

He added that he did not issue any statement when the voting and tallying exercise was underway because he did not want anyone to say he interfered with the outcome of the election.

He also thanked Kenyans for coming out in large numbers to exercise their democratic right.

Kibaki also appealed to all Kenyans to get back to their nation-building duties, saying the development momentum the country has attained should not slow down.

Mr Hassan said he was happy that his team’s dedication ensured that the election was successful.

He said a copy of the election results has also been presented to Chief Justice Willy Mutunga as required by the Constitution.
