No extension of school term, says Education Secretary Kaimenyi

Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi has ruled out an extension of the school term to compensate for time lost during the teachers’ strike.

Prof Kaimenyi said that school heads will have to devise other options to ensure that learners recover the hours they lost during the three-week strike period.

"I understand the challenges posed by the strike including the loss of time for learners but there will be discussions with stakeholders on this matter,” he said.

This will see the salary of the lowest paid teacher, who takes home a basic salary of Sh19,032, increase by Sh4,000 in commuter allowance up from the current Sh1,000.

At the same time, that of the highest paid—a chief principal—will increase to Sh16,000 up from the current Sh4,410 for the same allowance.

However, the offer on commuter allowance will be staggered over three years, the memorandum of understanding between Kuppet and Teachers Service Commission (TSC) shows.
