More than 20 heads of diplomatic missions on Thursday called for the full implementation of the Waki report.
“Alongside Kenyans, we look to Kenya’s leaders to implement the commission’s recommendations and ensure that those responsible for the violence are held to account. Implementation of fundamental reforms is essential to ensure the future democratic stability of the country,” the missions said in a joint statement.
The group said that the commission of inquiry on the post-election violence made important recommendations towards ending the culture of impunity in Kenya.
The report underlines the importance of further investigations into the post-poll violence, including sexually-related violence, and the conduct of security agencies during the crisis, the group said.
“It also brings focus on the imperative of police reform and visible processes of reconciliation among the people of Kenya. The commitment to address these issues and their implications for institutional reform is anchored in the National Accord agreed by the main parties,” they said.
Commitment
They further welcomed the commitment of President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga towards the implementation of the recommendations.
Those who supported the full implementation of the Waki report include Canada, Japan, Norway, Switzerland, and the United States and all European diplomatic missions accredited in Kenya, which include Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, European Commission delegation, Finland and France.
Others are Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom.
Separately, the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya also called for the implementation of the Waki and Kriegler reports. Icpak also offered its support in trying to reorganise and strengthen the Electoral Commission.
The body called for the setting up of a tribunal to gather detailed evidence to determine the guilty among those implicated and for appropriate action to be taken.
