Help on the way for victims’ kin

The government will next week hold a meeting with families who lost relatives in the Nakumatt Downtown fire.

According to the Special Programmes permanent secretary, Mr Ali Mohammed, the government will meet the families to determine how to extend assistance to them.

He said the government had taken stock of the tragedy and what needs to be done so that it can assist those affected.

Mr Mohammed, who was speaking at a Nairobi hotel, said he regretted the inconvenience caused to the public by the sealing off of Kenyatta Avenue.

He said it would take some time before the disaster zone around the burnt-out supermarket could be cleared.

The PS said the recovery operation was slow because of the fear that the old Woolworth building could collapse.
