Concern as workers stay home
Posted Thursday, March 5 2009 at 22:04
Employers on Thursday expressed concern at the disruption of business due to the breakdown of the transport system in parts of the country as many workers failed to report to work.
Federation of Kenya Employers director Jacqueline Mugo urged President Kibaki and PM Raila Odinga to resolve the issue before innocent lives are lost.
“Despite the security alert, no tangible measures seem to have been put in place to avert the violence and disruption ... There is no telling what the situation will be like tomorrow. We cannot keep losing lives as leaders play politics,” said Ms Mugo.
Rise up
In Embu, leaflets are circulating accusing police for extra-judicial killings. The leaflets, suspected to have been dropped by Mungiki sect adherents, urge the youths to rise up against the police.
DC Mohammed Maalim said the authors of the leaflets had not been identified but hinted they could be members of a local non-government organisation. Plainclothes police patrolled the town after word of the planned protests went round.
