Ongoro’s land grab case put off

A case against the MP accused of grabbing 96 acres in her constituency was on Thursday adjourned to April 29 because she was not served with suit papers.
Mr Justice John Osiemo ordered the Seventh Day Adventist Church (SDA) to serve its suit papers on Nairobi Metropolitan Development assistant minister Elizabeth Ongoro, the Kasarani MP. Ms Ongoro’s lawyer told the court that he only read in the media allegations against his client.
Suit papers
Lawyer T.J. Kajwang’, representing the church, agreed that she was not served the suit papers, explaining that when he tried to do so, he was informed that the MP was out of the country on official duty.
After the case was adjourned, a crowd started heckling Mr Kajwang’, who filed the case on behalf of the church. The SDA is demanding Sh1.4 million in special damages.
The crowd threatened to beat up the lawyer who, in the 2007 General Election, vied against Ms Ongoro and lost. Police at the law courts intervened and rescued the lawyer from the mob.
