- Students demand university administration rescinds its decision.
- The university had closed the registration process on February 7 and is adamant there will be no extension.
Kenyatta University has been closed indefinitely after day-long protests over exam registration turned ugly.
The students had staged a riot to demand an extension of the process.
They say the university administration closed the process before some of them had registered.
Earlier, the students had blockaded Thika Road occasioning a huge traffic snarl-up on the busy highway.
They were demanding that the administration rescinds its decision.
Police were called to the scene and as the confrontation turned violent police lobbed teargas to repel the students and force them back to campus.
The university had closed the registration process on February 7 and is adamant there will be no extension.
At least 2,000 students mostly under the self sponsored programme are affected.
A student told the Nation that even for those who paid fees past the due date the university would not change its stand.
It said the balance would be carried over to the next semester.
Some students and passersby have been injured as they scampered for safety.

The students will riot with or without permission. They never need anybody to ok, support or disapprove their riots. Their problems should be addressed and blame game stopped. It is time to competitively appoint public university leaders rather than appoint them on political and tribal affiliation.

went thru the same campus en its least wise to go to thika rd, but with the current economic status i understand y some ddnt register on time. u can only register once uve paid full fees, some opt to pay in installments(wat they can afford) en clear wen the sem is almost done. Madam Mugenda should be considerate to the fact that some wouldnt afford to pay the full fees on day one. the other story abt students wearing uniforms is a big joke introduce dress code like in strath not uniform.
