The young boy whose plight the Daily Nation highlighted on Monday is expected to see a doctor Wednesday at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Eight-year-old Stanley Badia will see a doctor at the Plastic Surgical Clinic.

Public Health minister Mrs Beth Mugo has also directed the Kenya Medical Research Institute (Kemri) director to carry out the necessary tests on the boy.

Previous visits

According to Ms Sylvia Atieno, the boy’s mother, previous visits to the hospital were unsuccessful as the doctors claimed there is no cure for the condition.

But the hospital director Mr Jotham Michemi disputed this saying that the condition, neurofibromatosis, is curable.

“We have had cases before where patients have growths on their face, limbs and trunk like the young boy. These cases have been treated through surgery,” he said.

Dr Malaki Owili, a dermatologist working at the Aga Khan Hospital said that he has worked on 10 patients suffering from a similar skin condition.

He said the disease is curable as smaller growths can easily be removed using laser technology.

He, however, added that larger growths are complicated to treat.
