Kenya has ruled out the possibility of going to war with Uganda over Migingo Island.

President Kibaki said on Friday that war was not an option, arguing that the two countries enjoy cordial relations dating back many years.

The President appealed for calm, saying that Kenya and Uganda depended on each other and that advocating war was not wise in dispute resolution.

President Kibaki warned leaders against politicising the controversy, and said unchecked utterances about the row was not good for the East African Community.

Both countries, he noted, had agreed on the way to unravel the dispute on the island’s ownership.

“There is a team in charge of the process,” he said, and asked that the joint survey team be given time to table its findings.

President Kibaki appealed to Kenyans to peacefully co-exist with people of neighbouring countries to boost trade.

He was speaking at Sichei Friends Secondary School in Bungoma West District during the funeral service for Ms Esther Nekesa Wambwa, 85, the mother Vice-President Michael Wamalwa, now deceased.
