Police on Wednesday freed the woman they have been holding following the shooting of Youth Affairs permanent secretary Kinuthia Murugu.

The woman was detained as detectives investigated the circumstances under which Mr Murugu was shot and injured on Saturday morning.

She was released on Wednesday afternoon from Kilimani Police Station cells after four days in custody. She had been shunted between Ruiru, Embakasi, Kilimani and Muthaiga police stations during the four days in custody.

Phone call history

She was collected by a sister and a friend. Police sources revealed that the woman said she lives in Umoja Estate, but it was not clear what she was doing in Kilimani when the gangsters attacked the PS, shooting him in the chest and abdomen.

Detectives had earlier collected data on the woman’s phone call history to ascertain who she had been communicating with before the shooting.

She was taken to the Nairobi Women’s Hospital on Wednesday afternoon for a check-up after women’s right organisations demanded that she gets medical assistance after her ordeal.

Meanwhile, the PS is still under observation at Nairobi Hospital where he was driven by a resident of Muringa Court who came to his assistance after the gangsters had fled.
