A Sabaot Lands Defence Force (SLDF) leader was on Wednesday gunned down by police in Kitale.

An assortment of paraphernalia used by the militia was found during the 11.30am operation.

Trans Nzoia head of police Bernard Muli said the man was shot dead as he attempted to escape to Neru forest, which borders Mt Elgon District.

Mr Muli said five of the man’s accomplices escaped police dragnet during the swoop at Neru farm.

“The suspect is among SLDF who had escaped to Uganda following operation to flush out members of the outlawed militia,” said the officer.

The militiaman was identified as Robert Kwamoi alias Roberto Carlos and is believed to have been one of the commanders.

Among the paraphernalia, Mr Muli said, included traditional herbs and roots used by the militia to administer oaths.

He said police had launch a manhunt for remnants of the outlawed militia who are still at large.

“We are not going to rest until all those associated with the militia are arrested for their crimes and made to face the law,” asserted Mr Muli.
