Mr Geoffrey Majiwa has retained the Nairobi mayoral seat after a closely fought contest in Monday elections.
The Orange Democratic Party Baba Dogo ward councillor garnered 48 votes against 46 for his challenger Mutunga Mutungi of the Party of National Unity.
Mr Majiwa’s supporters broke into song and dance after the result.
In a break away from past mayoral polls, which are characterised by ugly scenes Monday’s affair was peaceful.
ODM has 53 councillors while PNU boasts of 45.
To ensure that its slender majority at City Hall counted, the orange party sneaked all its 53 councillors to the Fish Eagle resort in Naivasha last Thursday and brokered a truce between the Majiwa camp and a rival camp led by Kaloleni/Makongeni ward councillor George Aladwa, where the latter was offered the deputy mayor’s seat after losing out in an in-house nomination.
The ODM councillors drove back to Nairobi on Sunday afternoon and spent the night at the Kenya College of Communication Technology, Mbagathi before driving in a convoy straight to City hall on Monday morning for the election.
