US secretary of State Hillary Clinton has arrived in the Kenya capital of Nairobi ahead of a seven-Africa nation tour.

Mrs Clinton will be at the official opening of the Africa Growth and Opportunity Act forum on Wednesday, which kicked off Tuesday at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi.

Security was tight at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport as armed police and the General Service Unit patrolled the area.

There was also heavy presence of intelligence officers from both Kenya and the US.

They had camped at the airport for most parts of the day.

Mrs Clinton arrived in a Boeing 707 at 6.40 pm and stepped on the Kenyan soil for the first time she assumed office at 6.55 pm.

On her arrival she was met by Foreign Affairs minister Moses Wetang’ula and the US Ambassador to Kenya Michael Ranneberger.

Mrs Clinton did not address the crowd that had come to witness her arrival at the airport.

She only waved at them and she was driven away under Kenya and US security personnel escort.
