2,000 Mau settlers to be evicted
Posted Sunday, August 9 2009 at 19:06
More than 2,000 forest settlers in Laikipia West and Baringo Central districts are pondering their next move following the expiry of an eviction notice.
The notice was issued by the government a fortnight ago. The local Provincial Administration is expected to execute the evictions that would see at least 2,500 structures illegally constructed by the settlers being demolished.
Title deeds
The government has disowned the settlers in Marmanet forest, Laikipia West, and Mochongoi forest in Baringo Central despite some of them having title deeds that they claim were genuinely issued by the government.
Nyahururu district commissioner Lucy Mulili held consultative meetings with the settlers. She was accompanied by an assistant provincial forest officer in charge of Central Highlands Elizabeth Wambugu and Laikipia district forest officer Samwel Mukundi.
