In Summary

  • Kenyans operating on the island will, however, be allowed to go back to their homes in the mainland to be counted.

Uganda may bar Kenya census officials from accessing Migingo Island, security officers have said.

“As it is now, Migingo is our territory and we will not allow enumerators to come here unless we are directed by our bosses,” one of the officers told the Nation by phone on Thursday.

He said Kenyans operating on the island will, however, be allowed to go back to their homes in the mainland to be counted.

But the Migori DC Julius Mutula downplayed the matter saying he was already talking to the Ugandan authorities to allow the exercise to take place on the fish-rich island on the night of 24 and 25 August.

“We are just going to count our people…not to reclaim the island. We want to know how many Kenyans operate on the island as traders and fishermen,” he said.

Mr Mutula said the enumerators will be guarded by Kenyan security officers during their visit to the island.

This is annoying, nay disgusting. If Uganda lives by her threat and stops our enumerators from Migingo, it should be treated as a declaration of war. Safeguarding of our national borders is a constitutional duty of the President and any lapse can only be directly interpreted as a failure, a serious dereliction of duty. We cannot afford to keep our Army in the barracks any longer than we have in the face of this kind of arrogant aggression. Kenya needs to stand up and be counted.

This whole Migingo saga has now gone too far. Once the president declared it was in Kenya, then those foreigners staking claim to it are doing so illegally and should hence be arrested asap! Utterly ridiculous!

Ugandans are controlling Migingo yet Kibaki quipped that " we have all along known Migingo is in Kenya" South Sudannesse soldiers are manning the border deep inside the kenyan side and blocking our ministers from travelling. Yet politicians(Foreign affairs and internal security ministers included) still have the nerves to say we are a sovereign state. God forbid. This are times when we are ashamed of being kenyans!!! and stolen elections by moribund leader!!!
