Official documents and property worth millions of shillings were destroyed after a fierce fire razed offices belonging to the National Water Conservation and Pipeline Corporation in Nairobi.

Eyewitnesses said the fire, which occurred at about 3.18 am Thursday morning, destroyed all the documents in the corporation’s administration block, accounts department, human resources, planning and chief executive’s offices on Dunga Road, Industrial area.

Vital documents, which include payment vouchers belonging to suppliers as well as files belonging to members of staff were also destroyed.

Also destroyed was the official vehicle belonging to chief executive Meshack Saboke.

The Corporation’s head of security, Mr Joel Koskei said although the cause of fire had not been established, initial investigations show it was as a result of an electrical fault.

“When I received a call that fire had broken out, I directed guards on duty to douse it out using fire extinguishers and also ensure they called the Nairobi Fire Brigade immediately,” Mr Koskei said.

Following the inferno, guards on night duty summoned fire-fighters from the Nairobi Fire Brigade who arrived at the scene after 15 minutes.

Water and Irrigation Services minister Charity Ngilu and her assistant minister Mwangi Kiunjuri later visited the scene of the incident.
