Heavy rains set to begin next week
Large swathes of Kenya will be drenched in the next few days, weather experts have announced.
“The outlook for October 2009 indicates that most parts of the country are likely to experience enhanced rainfall during the month. This will be mainly associated with the evolving El Niño conditions,” said Dr Joseph Mukabana, the director of the Kenya Meteorological Department.
Already, parts of Rift Valley, Nyanza and Western provinces are receiving the much-awaited short rains, with some farmers complaining that this could lead to destruction of maize now drying in the fields.
According to the forecast, by next week, almost all parts of the country will be receiving rain. This will include North Eastern Province, which has been worst affected by the current drought.
However, a few areas such as Lodwar, Narok, Makindu and Voi, may have to wait until the last week of this month to experience substantial rains, but predictions are that when they come, they will be above normal for October.
Under trees
The heaviest downpour is expected in parts of the Rift Valley highlands such as Kitale, Kericho, Nandi and Eldoret, and Kakamega, while Kisumu, Kisii and Busia will maintain or even accelerate current momentum.
People in those areas have been warned not to shelter under trees because of lightning. Mudslides are expected in Murang’a and Nandi Hills.
Moyale, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Mombasa, Mtwapa, Malindi, Msabaha and Lamu will get somewhat heavy rains. Nairobi and parts of Central Province will get heavy rainfall.
