It started in the 90s

KCSE exam papers have been leaked numerous times since the onset of the 8-4-4 system.

1991

The Nation obtains Economics Paper 2, History Paper 1, English Composition, Biological Science Practical, Christian Religious Education Paper 2 and Commerce. Then Education minister Joseph Kamotho orders an investigation. The remaining papers of the exam postponed for 10 days.

1995

A bag containing Kiswahili and Commerce KCSE papers is found. Knec secretary Ahmed Yussuf says officials and police escorting the papers were responsible. The two papers are cancelled and re-sat.

1999

Leaked KCSE Kiswahili, Geography and Maths papers sold in the streets. Education PS Wilfred Kimalat says “it is not possible for a leakage to occur.”

2000

Police officers transporting KCSE papers arrested after rumours of leakage spread.

2003

Papers found in a teacher’s house. Ten students are charged for leaking Commerce Paper one and two, Chemistry paper one and Biology Paper two-practical. Knec secretary Juma Mwachibi denies any leaks.

2006

Nation obtains copies of History Paper and Chemistry Paper 1 hours before the tests begin. Education assistant minister Kilemi Mwiria tells Parliament that “no evidence had been adduced to show that some candidates had access to the papers.” Maths papers also obtained hours before tests begin.

2007

Maths paper faxed to Nation’s Machakos office hours before tests begin by anonymous people. Knec secretary Paul Wasanga admits the paper is genuine.
