Provisional results for the 2009 population census will be released on December 31.

Planning minister Wycliffe Oparanya said the purported results published in a section of the media recently were untrue and based on the 1999 census and other surveys.

“The government has not released the official results. These will be published after vigorous scrutiny,” he said.

The results indicated that Kenya’s population has grown by an average of one million per year in the past 10 years.

Mr Oparanya also revealed that 5,900 census officials have not yet been paid for various reasons including conflicting information on bank accounts, lack of identity card and failure to indicate workstations.
