Ten people displaced from southwestern Mau forest have been admitted to the Olonguruone Sub-District Hospital for treatment of diarrhoea and vomiting.

This has sparked fears of an outbreak of a waterborne disease among evictees now living in makeshift camps on the roadside and open fields. Lack of clean water, toilets and cold weather are among challenges the displaced families are facing.

On Saturday, the Kenya Red Cross North Rift Regional Manager, Mr Patrick Nyongesa, said his officials were dealing with a myriad of diseases at the camps, with most of the patients having upper respiratory tract infections. “Most of them, especially children, women and the elderly, are suffering from respiratory ailments due to the extremely cold weather and lack of proper shelter,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuresoi MP Zakayo Cheruiyot on Saturday termed Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s claim that big land owners were fuelling discontent in Mau restoration as false.

Speaking at a fund-raiser at Kaplamboi Primary School in his constituency, Mr Cheruiyot challenged the PM to give facts to back his allegations.

But Lands minister James Orengo and Alego MP Edwin Yinda on Saturday said legislators from Rift Valley province would not succeed in bringing down the Premier over Mau evictions.

The two MPs were speaking at Obambo Mixed Secondary School in South Central Alego location within Siaya District when they presided over a funds drive in aid of the institution.
