A trailer that was involved in an accident that claimed a woman’s life on Christmas Day on Tuesday killed a man as it was being towed to the police station.

The trailer disengaged from the vehicle that was towing it to Webuye Police Station and smashed into several cars.

Pedestrians and hawkers were also hurt during the incident.

One of the vehicles was reduced to a shell after it was run over while five others had their windscreens shattered.

On Christmas Day, the trailer fell on Ms Jessica Nanyakha, a teacher at Mukhuyu Primary School in Webuye Town, as she walked home from church.
The driver of the trailer, who is said to have been speeding, went missing after the accident occurred.

Residents have threatened to torch the trailer if they are not compensated for the loss and damage it has caused.

Road accidents

They said the trailer should be held at the police station until the owner is identified.

In Nyamira District, 17 passengers were injured in two separate road accidents.

The first accident occurred at Rangenyo on Nyamira-Kisumu road where seven passengers were injured after the driver of a saloon car lost control of the overloaded vehicle.

The second accident that involved a matatu, occurred at Nyamotaro on the Kericho–Nyamira road. Ten passengers were injured after one of the matatu’s tyres burst.

Nyamira OCPD Shadrack Maithya said the tyre burst when the driver braked to avoid running over a child who was crossing the road.

Those injured in the two accidents were taken to Nyamira District Hospital for treatment. Mr Maithya urged motorists and passengers to observe traffic rules.
