Top journalism award winners announced

The recipients of the prestigious David Astor Journalism Award for this year have been announced.

Kenyan journalist Alex Kiprotich of The Standard, Jiang Alipo of The Daily News in Tanzania; and Raymond Baguma at The New Vision in Uganda are the 2010 winners .

The award is aimed at recognising exceptional young journalists who show the greatest potential and determination to excel over the long term.

They join six previous award winners Jillo Kadida of Daily Nation and Muriithi Mutiga of the Sunday Nation (Kenya) and Tabu Butagira, a senior reporter at the Daily Monitor (Uganda); all of which are Nation Media Group owned newspapers.

Other previous recipients are Valentine Marc Nkwame at The Daily News and Erick Kabendera at The Guardian in Tanzania, and Barbara Among at The New Vision in Uganda.

The David Astor Journalism Awards Trust is a UK-registered charity working to promote independent journalism in Africa.

The awards are in memory of David Astor, the late editor of UK's The Observer newspaper who is remembered for his fight for human rights in Africa.
