An audit of government armouries is in progress following the recent seizure of thousands of bullets from unauthorised people.

The audit is to establish the current measures of controlling the flow of arms and ammunition besides finding out how more than 130,000 bullets recovered at a businessman’s premises in Narok were obtained.

On Tuesday, a team of investigators visited the Administration Police Training College in Embakasi and scrutinised armoury records.

They have also visited the police headquarters at Vigilance House, the Nairobi area command and other key formations of the force.

“Vital installations of the Kenya Police have been probed in the ongoing investigation,” police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said.

The Kenya Ordinance Factory Corporation (KOFC), a parastatal under the Ministry of Defence, which manufactures and sells bullets, has also been visited by the detectives.

Military spokesman Bogita Ongeri told the Nation: “They (investigators) went to KOFC and we gave them evidence to help in the investigation.”

Officers close to the investigation told the Nation that the team also visited the Department of Defence headquarters, but Mr Ongeri said he was not aware of the enquiries made there.

Several officers familiar with standard procedures in procuring ammunition said it was possible to trace culprits even in circumstances where a single bullet is found in the wrong hands. This, they said, was because the bullets had distinct numbers.
