An MP embezzled Sh1.9 million when he was a civil servant, Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee was told on Thursday.

Tharaka MP Alex Mwiru is said to have embezzled the money together with a clerk in his office while he served as the District Lands Adjudication Officer in Nakuru, Lands permanent secretary Dorothy Angote told the committee.

Mr Mwiru is now a member of the Public Accounts Committee.

Ms Angote said the MP used to make Sh44,724 a month as a civil servant but, within 20 months, the ministry found out that Sh1.9 million had been embezzled in the Nakuru District office.

He and the clerk “jointly and severally” took the money but when plans were made to attach their salaries, Mr Mwiru handed in his resignation.

The PAC is the supreme watchdog committee of Executive spending.

The committee heard that the PS sought to have Mr Mwiru prosecuted in the courts, but Attorney General Amos Wako entered a nolle prosequi.

However, the magistrate had ruled that the MP could be re-arrested and charged for the same offence.

I totally concur with Baraza´s view on this issue.Half salary pending investitagations and if found guilty losses the pending half salary plus jail.Untill unless we are transparent, kenya as a country will just fail. They say,a country is people but if they are thiefs.... what then?Colapse of a nation, period!

What is the procedure of handling an MP when he is involved in corrupt deals? I suggest he/she be suspended from the House and paid half pay pending investigations. No allowances to him/her.

Public Accounts Committee is a Committee which requires people with integrity, so if found guilty he ought to vacate the seat. Or if he is patriotic then step down till investigations are concluded.

He should be prosecuted according to the law. If convicted, he must pay back, pay penalties ten times what he stole and serve time in jail. This is the only way to discourage these thieves. Jail time must be made mandatory for all convicted of theft of public funds. Protect the innocent by the guilty must pay back and serve jail time

Mr President and Prime Minister, there is something you both agree on, that is, Attorney General Wako is past his due date. Indeed, sanctions were not instituted against him in vain. True we are a sovereign country and do not play to any Western tune, but please help us working Kenyans. Thank you.
