Fresh demands for truth behind Standard raid

The government faces renewed pressure to release the report of the Kiruki commission of inquiry amid fresh demands for the truth behind the raid on the Standard Group four years ago.

The media group commemorated the raid on Tuesday.

Kenyans, on March 2, 2006, woke to the shocking news of an attack on the group, during which KTN was put off air, the printing plant disabled, several computers stolen and thousands of newspapers burnt.

Speaking at the commemoration of the raid at the group’s offices on Mombasa Road, lawyer Paul Muite said the truth behind the raid must be revealed.

The former Kikuyu MP urged Prime Minister Raila Odinga to call a meeting with Cabinet ministers George Saitoti and Mutula Kilonzo and Attorney General Amos Wako to make a decision on the matter.

The government, he said, must also make a decision on returning the group’s computers and a vehicle seized in the raid.

“There is no justification for continuing to hold the equipment if police have not made any headway because the management will be more than happy to have them back,” he said.
