The Maulid festival has officially started, with about 50,000 visitors expected to attend the event on Lamu Island.
A majority of Lamu County Council staff has been deployed to the island to ensure visitors’ safety.
Council Clerk Patrick Ouya Tuesday said teams had also been deployed to maintain cleanliness.
“We have also bought a new truck for garbage collection,” he said.
The event is organised by Riyadha Mosque and Islamic Centre.
Coordinator Muhdhar Khitamy said the festival opened with Koran recitation and memorisation. Also lined up are cultural activities for Wednesday and Thursday at the Riyadha Mosque.
Other activities include donkey, dhow and boat races, swimming and football competitions and special forums by prominent people and Muslim scholars.
