A journey to a graduation ceremony ended tragically when six people died after the matatu they were travelling on collided with a lorry on the Sagana-Makutano road.
Ten others were seriously injured during the accident.
The hired matatu was bound for Nyeri, while the lorry, belonging to a road construction firm, was on its way to Sagana from Karatina.
Three of those who perished and all the injured were members of one family, who were travelling to Kamwenja Teachers College in Nyeri from Bomet District for the graduation of their relative.
They had clocked hundreds of kilometres when tragedy struck. The matatu driver and his conductor also died on the spot, while the driver of the lorry escaped death narrowly.
A sombre mood engulfed Gitumbi Village in Ndia Division, where the accident occurred, as the bodies were ferried to the mortuary.
The survivors — who suffered leg, hand and head injuries — were taken to Karatina District Hospital, where they are fighting for their lives.
One of the nurses at the hospital described the condition of the survivors as serious, adding that a few had been taken for emergency surgery.
“It was a shocking incident. Most of those who escaped death by a whisker can’t even talk due to the injuries they sustained,” she said.
A resident, Mr John Irungu, said: “I heard a loud bang from my house as I slept and woke up. I headed towards the scene of the accident only to find bodies lying on the road.”
