Blasts: Kibaki meets security chiefs

President Kibaki on Monday morning chaired a meeting of top security officials at State House following two blasts at a referendum rally that left five dead and 75 injured.

The President instructed all relevant security and other government agencies to move with speed and establish the circumstances that led to the stampede, and subsequent deaths and injuries.

The National Security Committee meeting was also attended by Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.

During the meeting President Kibaki was briefed on the Sunday tragedy that happened at Nairobi's Uhuru Park when two blasts went off. The blasts caused panic and a stampede from hundreds of people who were still at the venue.

The President condemned those behind the crime against innocent Kenyans. He sent his condolences to families and friends of those who lost their loved ones and wished those who suffered injuries quick recovery.

The President appealed for calm as the government seeks to get to the bottom of the heinous crime against the Kenyan people.

A team of top security officials then visited the scene of the blasts.

They included Mr Odinga, Mr Musyoka, the two Deputy Prime Ministers Uhuru Kenyatta and Musalia Mudavadi, Head of Civil Service Francis Muthaura, Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere, and National Security Intelligence Services chief Michael Gichangi.
