Nine people died on the spot at dawn Tuesday when the van they were travelling in rammed a truck ferrying sand along Nairobi-Mombasa highway.

Police said the dead were transporting a sick relative from Mikindani in Mombasa county to Alego Usonga constituency in Siaya county when the accident happened at 4.30 am.

The dead included a man, his wife, their two children, the man’s mother, the driver, the sick man, a lady passenger and her child.

The vehicle is said to have rammed the truck from behind at the Kapiti Plains near the Machakos turn-off, killing the nine instantly.

Police said the vehicle must have been speeding when it rammed the truck as it was extensively damaged.

The lorry crew however escaped unhurt.

The dead were taken to the Machakos District Hospital mortuary.
