Regular Police claim the constable was a criminal who was robbing people after handcuffing them

An Administration Police officer was on Sunday morning shot dead by his Regular Police counterparts in unclear circumstances in Nairobi’s Kayole estate.

The shooting comes barely three days after AP officers shot dead a police corporal on Kapenguria Road in Spring Valley.

On Sunday, officers from Soweto Police Station said that they had got information at 4.45am that a gang of robbers was targeting revellers returning home from a popular club and a woman had been raped.

They said they rushed to the scene and found the suspects and shot one of them dead while two others escaped.

The suspect who was killed was later identified as AP Constable Godfrey Wanjau Kamau. A pair of handcuffs were found on him.

His colleagues, however, dismissed the claims as fabrications, saying Mr Kamau, who was based at Embakasi District Officer’s office had just finished night shift and was on his way home.

The APs claimed that despite identifying himself, the officers went ahead and shot their colleague.

“He produced his identification card which they scrutinised and then allowed him to go, but opened fire as he walked away,” claimed a senior AP officer, who sought anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter. He claimed that the scene was cleared immediately to conceal evidence.

Due to rising tension between the two units, senior officers from both services convened an urgent meeting on Sunday.

Police, however, insist that Mr Kamau was a criminal and that they had four complainants, including the woman who was raped.

Kayole police boss Moses Lubisia said Mr Kamau was positively identified by the victims who had earlier reported that they were handcuffed before being robbed of their valuables. “All the victims have recorded statements with the DCIO Kayole,” he said.
