Bull fight to spice up drama fete

The schools and colleges national drama festival starts on Tuesday at Kakamega High School and Mukumu Girls High School.

The opening ceremony procession will be led by the Salvation Army Band, starting at Kakamega High School to Bukhungu Stadium for a bull fight.

According to Western Province drama chairman Rowland Ombuge, six bulls including Osama, Sonko, Tungani, Major and Junior will battle it out.

Western provincial director of education Kenneth Misoi, the event national chairman Chokera Kahura and national executive secretary Sirengo Khaemba will attend the ceremony.

Adjudicators selected

On Monday, 14 adjudicators were selected to judge the 53rd Annual Drama Festivals, which aims at celebrating the diverse Kenyan cultures as well as proding various social issues that are of concern to Kenyans.

Mr Khaemba said the 14 adjudicators selected by the executive committee are Prof C. J. Odhiambo of Moi University, Dr Carolyne Omulando and Mr Collins Mumo, who will preside over the secondary schools items — stage plays, dances, oral narratives and verses.

Mr Joseph Murungu, Mr Fred Shitubi and Ms Esther Mbaya will judge the colleges category.

The primary school adjudicators include Mr Manoah Musa, Ms Dorine Maranga and Dr Robert Oduori.

Others are Dr Milka Chokah, Mr David Wanina, Mr Edwin Nyutho and Ms Rachael Diang’a.

Teams expected to perform today at Kakamega High include Moi Primary School from Thika with a choreographed dance by Antony Bundi, Kagumo College with a play, Mombasa Aviation with an oral narrative, Kenya Institute of Mass Communication with a play, Asumbi Teachers Training College with a solo verse and Migori Teachers Training College with a play.

Expected line-up

Others are Rwiki Technical College, Kibabii Diploma Teachers Training College and Kenya Institute of Special Education.

At Mukumu Girls High School, there will be performances by Inthangathi Primary, Kanyakine Boys, Makutano AIC, Nairobi Primary, Daniel Comboni Primary, Westlands Primary, M. M. Shah Primary and St Thomas Aquinas. Others are Naikarra Boarding and Mudasa Academy.

Mumias Sugar, the title sponsors of the festival, will award the participants certificates of participation.

Mumias Sugar Company managing director Evans Kidero will award the winners during the Gala Day on April 18 at Kakamega High School.

The National Cohesion and Integration Commission is also among the sponsors of this year’s event under the theme: ‘Enhancing National Cohesion and Integration’.
