The body charged with the implementation of the new Constitution now says the recent vetting of police officers was unlawful.

The Constitution Implementation Committee (CIC) chairman, Mr Charles Nyachae says the vetting can only be conducted by the Police Service Commission, which has not been constituted.

Speaking at a workshop organised by Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHCR) in Nairobi, Mr Nyachae said he had instead written to Police Commissioner, Mr Mathew Iteere and Administration Police Commandant Kinuthia Mbugua on the legalities of the issue.

“Such a process has to be done openly and my commission is there to ensure that the Constitution is followed to the letter,” Mr Nyachae said.

Mr Nyachae stated that the activity resulted in the misuse of public funds despite Mr Iteere defending the process as in internal matter.

He said such processes have to be referred to CIC so that they can review and recommend unless it negates the tenets of implementing the new document.

“The constitution has to be followed to the detail in anything that is happening in this country and our commission will go for nothing less than that,” the CIC chairman said.
