Clinix to send workers home

A firm that was among those contracted by the national health insurer to offer medical care services to civil servants is set to lay off part of its workforce of more than 1,000.

Affected employees of Clinix Healthcare Ltd told the Nation that they had been notified of the impending layoffs after the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) suspended the healthcare provider.

The suspension was effected over anomalies surrounding the fund’s administration.(READ: Clinix, Meridian suspended as NHIF issues new list)

Clinix chairman Janesh Saini said: “We have been forced to lay off some of our over 1,000 employees because the contract we signed with NHIF has been cancelled.”

“It is a painful decision to take but we are going to contract a human resource firm to do the job in order to ensure nobody is unfairly victimised,” he added.

NHIF last month published a list of more than 600 hospitals and clinics that will offer outpatient medical services to civil servants and members of the disciplined forces to replace Clinix and Meridian Medical Centre after their suspension.

At the same time, Central Organisation of Trade Unions secretary-general Francis Atwoli has maintained that workers cannot remit their money to an account that is not transparently managed.

Mr Atwoli said investigating agencies dealing with NHIF case should move with speed and disclose the anomalies.

The union boss said: “The CID and other investigating arms of government should expedite the process of establishing what went wrong so that corrective measures can be taken without any further delay.”

He was speaking during a fund-raiser in aid of the Nehema Institute of Science and Technology in Eldoret Town, Uasin Gishu County.

“The scheme is managed in a retrogressive way,” Mr Atwoli said.
