Constitution: Yes campaign rolls out team

Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday launched the joint Yes secretariat to back campaigns for the Proposed Constitution and dismissed claims of a split within the team.

The secretariat, which brings together the two arms of the Grand Coalition Government - the Party of National Unity and the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) teams - will be led by Prof Peter Kagwanja and Ms Janet Ongera representing the two wings respectively.

The joint-heads of the secretariat are expected to announce the Yes campaign program on Monday afternoon, which will include structures from the national level to the grassroots.

"We have agreed to formalise the structures of the Yes campaign and Prof Kagwanja and Ms Ongera will be the leaders," the PM said at his office after chairing a meeting that brought together members of the PNU coalition and ODM.
The political wing of the Yes campaign will be led by Cabinet ministers Kiraitu Murungi and Anyang Nyong'o.

Kenya's Proposed Constitution will be subjected to a referendum on August 4 where, to pass, it must garner 50 per cent plus one vote of all those cast and also get a minimum of 25 per cent approval in five of the eight provinces.

The coalition government led by President Kibaki and Mr Odinga has thrown its weight firmly behind the Proposed Constitution, while three Cabinet Ministers have broken away and joined some church leaders in opposing it.
